Buckeye #232

    Buckeye #232

This banjo has a 12" rim and a highly figured curly maple neck with a rich amber stain.  It has a rolled brass tone ring and a super cool spotted goat skin head, provided by Jeff Menzies.  These specs give it a nice balanced tone, with lots of punch and clarity.

The most prominent ornamentation on this banjo is the Formica peghead overlay and heel cap - the white with gold fleck pattern was popular in the 60's and 70's, but has been discontinued.  It was used by Kyle Creed on the now famous fretless banjo he made for Fred Cockerham (see photo in slideshow).  Today this pattern is extremely rare, but luckily Riley Baugus was kind enough to share a little bit of his special stash with me.

Other features include an elegant backstrap, wide fingerboard, engraved Nautical star at the 5th, and engraved dot position markers.

This banjo is simple, yet elegant and has a beautiful, balanced tone which would work well in any playing situation.  It is easy to play and has enough projection to cut through when needed, but also has a sweet, mellow voice that will sound good played solo, or with just a fiddler.

It is made from a gorgeous piece of very dense, reddish walnut which has a slight bit of figure in the heel.  There are thin white/black veneers down the center of the neck and under all the trim wood.  While the front of the instrument remains relatively unadorned, the heel features a classic engraved ornament.  Experimental details include BUCKEYE stamped into the wood at the base of the scoop and a rounded over rim cap on the interior of the rim.
